I absolutely love this place! I’ve been coming here for every meal during my stay, and each time the food has been fantastic. They serve a wide variety of authentic Sri Lankan dishes, with spice levels ranging from low to high — I personally love their medium option for just the right kick.There are plenty of vegan and vegetarian choices, and everything is freshly prepared with rich, bold flavors. The staff are warm and welcoming - a special thanks to Daya who made every visit feel personal and enjoyable.They also offer cooking classes, which is a great way to learn how to bring these amazing flavors home.Note: During peak hours, you might need to wait in a queue — but trust me, it’s worth it. Highly recommend this gem, and I’ll definitely keep coming back!

Matey Hut is an absolute gem — the food is truly delicious, and it would be a real shame not to stop by if you're in Ella. This place is definitely worth a visit. The prices are very reasonable, and the portions are generous, so the value for money is excellent.The presentation of the dishes is also impressive – everything looks appetizing and well thought out. The flavors are fantastic, the kind that make you want to come back the very next day. Unfortunately, our stay in Ella was too short to enjoy it again, but we truly hope to return someday. And we’re confident the quality will be just as great, because it really left a lasting impression.One thing to keep in mind – in the evening, there can be lines. The restaurant isn’t very big, and there are a lot of people wanting to get in. But honestly, that’s probably the best kind of recommendation – Matey Hut is a place that food lovers are drawn to.

Absolutely Incredible – Best Curry in Sri Lanka!We had dinner here twice, and after experiencing how amazing the food was, we just had to take the cooking class as well! Every single dish was packed with flavor, and you could truly taste the love and skill that goes into making it.The staff were all so lovely and friendly, making the experience even better. It’s truly impressive how they create such incredible meals in their small kitchen – a real testament to their talent! Yes, there was a queue, but it was absolutely worth the wait.This wasn’t just the best curry in Ella – it was the best we had in all of Sri Lanka! And the cooking class? That was the cherry on top! Such a warm, enjoyable experience that made us appreciate Sri Lankan food even more.Honestly, I wouldn’t mind traveling to Ella again just to eat here! Highly recommend to anyone visiting!

When you’re in Ella, Matey Hut is the must-visit place to enjoy authentic Sri Lankan food. It was one of the best, if not the best, dining experiences we had in Sri Lanka.From the outside, the restaurant may seem unassuming, but inside, they truly work magic. It was busy when we arrived, so we had to wait a bit for a table. However, we were able to order during the wait, and the time flew by. Once seated, our food arrived immediately. The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly, constantly checking to ensure we were comfortable and happy. Their hospitality made the entire experience even better.For drinks, we ordered a chocolate milkshake and a passion fruit juice, the latter being the best I’ve ever had. As starters, we tried the vegetarian samosas and crispy chicken, both served with a delicious dip. For mains, we had devilled chicken and rice with four vegetable curries and papadam. The devilled chicken was a massive portion and full of flavor. The highlight, though, was the “four curries” dish, where you can choose four varieties from the menu. It’s a great way to experience the incredible culinary diversity Sri Lanka offers.If you’re in Ella, don’t miss Matey Hut. Truly unforgettable!

Went here for a late lunch at 3pm and got seated right away.The staff were great at understanding I wanted vegan vegetable noodles (no egg, no butter, not cooked in / with meat), checking with me several times and it tasted amazing!My partner had pumpkin curry and paratha and gobble it up in record time.Massive 2 thumbs up! Thank you!

What a great meal! One of my favorite in Sri Lanka and special in that you can pick your own curries. Really tasty food and good experience watching the traffic go by. Friendly staff too! While there the secret got out on the food so be prepared for a queue but it’s worth it.

The best thing I’ve eaten in Sri Lanka so far! We had a green bean curry, beetroot curry, pumpkin curry and aubergine curry, with chicken on the side. Every single thing was delicious. Quick service and friendly staff. Amazing value for money. Would 100% recommend!

Don’t be taken aback by the outside building structure, looks like shack but the food is cheap and amazing. I can’t stop eating Rice and curry and the one ordered in here, was as delicious and tasty as anywhere else or even better. Good service and short waiting time for the ordered food. You guys rock! One of the best places in Ella so far.
